COURSE OUTLINE

Dev to AI Engineer
in 6 months

A free, hands-on learn-along for developers. One real project, 13 levels, one small win a day. Built in public by Naowal, a learning designer who is learning with you.

177 days13 levels1 real projectabout 10 h a week2 videos a weekfree
By the end you will have built and deployed an AI knowledge assistant, and you will be able to explain how every part of it works.

Who it is for

This is for you if

  • You can write code in any language (C#, Java, JavaScript, Python...).
  • You want to build AI features, not just use chat tools.
  • You can give about 10 hours a week, and you like to learn by doing.
  • You want a project you can show, not a pile of exercises.

You do not need

  • A maths or machine learning background.
  • Python experience (we start from zero in Python).
  • A GPU, or any paid tool to start. Day 0 is free.
  • To finish in exactly 6 months. The plan waits for you.

What you will be able to do

  1. Write clean, typed, tested Python and set up a project the way a professional does.
  2. Build a FastAPI service that calls an LLM, with validation and logging.
  3. Explain tokens, context windows and embeddings in plain words.
  4. Build RAG on PostgreSQL with pgvector, with answers that cite their sources.
  5. Give an assistant tools (function calling and MCP) and a simple agent loop.
  6. Measure quality with a golden question set instead of feelings.
  7. Spot prompt injection and add guardrails and audit logs.
  8. Operate and deploy it: tracing, a cost dashboard, Docker Compose and CI.

The one project

You do not build 13 small demos. You build one project, ai-knowledge-assistant: a tool that answers questions about a private knowledge base (manuals, FAQs, error codes) and cites its sources. It grows a little every Saturday.

The 13 levels in 4 phases

Phase 1

Build the backend

Python and FastAPI: a tested service that calls an LLM.

Days 1 to 16 · Levels 1-2
Phase 2

Understand the model

Tokens, embeddings, LLM apps and prompting, so you know what the API is doing.

Days 17 to 58 · Levels 3-5
Phase 3

Make it smart and measurable

RAG, tools and agents, then evaluation so quality is measured.

Days 59 to 107 · Levels 6-8
Phase 4

Make it production-ready

AI-assisted engineering, design decisions, security, operations and deployment.

Days 108 to 174 · Levels 9-13
LevelTopic and daysYou learn toYou ship
Phase 1: Build the backend
1Python & Software Engineering for AI
Days 1-2
Write clean, typed, tested Python and set up a project the way a professional does.A uv-managed Python package with tests, logging and Git history: the skeleton of the AI service.
2AI Backend Development
Days 3-16
Build and test a FastAPI service that calls an LLM.POST /api/chat, /api/summarize and /api/extract: validated, logged, documented, on GitHub.
Phase 2: Understand the model
3Data, Machine Learning & LLM Foundations
Days 17-37
Explain tokens, context windows, embeddings and attention in plain language. Two short design notes: how tokens limit the assistant, and why embeddings beat keyword search.
4Building Applications with LLMs
Days 38-51
Make LLM calls reliable: structured output, streaming, retries and rate limits.Structured JSON answers (answer, sources, confidence) with streaming, retries and basic rate limiting.
5Prompt, Context & Harness Engineering
Days 52-58
Design prompts and context so the assistant cites sources and admits when it does not know.A rewritten system prompt with few-shot examples and a before/after comparison.
Phase 3: Make it smart and measurable
6Grounding Models with Data & RAG
Days 59-79
Build retrieval-augmented generation on PostgreSQL with pgvector.A pipeline that chunks a mock knowledge base, embeds it, retrieves the top results and answers with citations.
7Tool Calling, MCP & Agentic Systems
Days 80-100
Let the model act: call tools, and expose them over MCP.One real tool (look up an error code) through function calling, optionally as a minimal MCP server.
8Evaluation-Driven AI Development
Days 101-107
Measure quality with data instead of feelings.15-20 golden questions and a script that scores the pipeline.
Phase 4: Make it production-ready
9Coding Agents & AI-Assisted Software Engineering
Days 108-114
Use AI coding agents deliberately and safely on a real repository. An AGENTS.md / CLAUDE.md, plus one real feature built with an agent and reviewed like a pull request.
10Shaping the Build & AI System Design
Days 115-121
Frame a problem and justify design decisions. One architecture decision record: why RAG, why pgvector, and one thing deliberately not built.
11AI Security, Guardrails & Governance
Days 122-128
Spot and block prompt injection, data leakage and tool abuse. An allow-list guardrail for tool calls and an audit log of questions, sources and tool calls.
12LLMOps & Operating AI Systems in Production
Days 129-142
Operate an AI system in production: tracing, cost, latency and feedback.A dashboard with question count, success rate, response time, AI cost and failed queries.
13Production Deployment, AI Infrastructure & Model Serving
Days 143-174
Package and deploy the whole system. One command (docker compose up) for React, ASP.NET Core, Python AI and PostgreSQL, plus a CI workflow.

Days 175-176 are the final demo weekend: run the whole project, record the demo, and look back at the 6 months. Day 177 is a short closing lesson: your plan for the next three months. Days count from the day you sign in; the map shows the calendar dates.

How a lesson works

  • Warm-up: two questions from earlier days, from memory.
  • Hook and the idea: at most 3 small ideas, each with an example.
  • Worked example: a finished example with its real output.
  • Try it: 4 steps, from copy-and-run to your own version. One step breaks the code on purpose.
  • Stuck? Check yourself: hints, then the solution; 3 questions to answer in your own words.
  • Tick the checklist: the next Day unlocks.

Built on retrieval practice, spaced review, worked examples and learning by doing.

Videos: 2 a week

Thursday: Concept

5 to 8 minutes on the idea of the week, with slides, editor and terminal.

Monday: Build

8 to 12 minutes of the Saturday lab: what I built, what broke, and what I changed.

New videos on YouTube at 19:00 (Bangkok time). Watch first, then do the day, or do the day first and watch to compare.

What you need

What this is not: a certificate programme, a job guarantee, or a replacement for a degree. It is a clear path, a real project, and company while you build it.

Questions

Can I join late?

Yes. Sign in and your plan is counted from the day you sign in. Start with Day 0, then Day 1. You can watch the videos in any order, but the checklists work best in order.

Do I need an AI or maths background?

No. You need to be able to write code in any language. We start with Python from the first lesson.

Is it really free?

Yes. The lessons, slides, checklists and videos are free. Some labs call an LLM API that may cost a little. Each lab says what it needs.

What if I fall behind?

Nothing breaks. The next Day unlocks when you finish the checklist, not when the date arrives. Every Sunday has a catch-up slot, and a missed day never moves the next week.

Do I need to know C# or .NET?

No. The project has an ASP.NET Core layer in front of the Python AI service, and that layer is optional. You can follow every level with the Python service alone.

Will I get a certificate or a job?

No certificate and no promise of a job. You get one real project you can run, explain and show, and a public record of your work.

Who is teaching?

Nobody is a teacher here. Naowal is a learning designer and software developer who is doing the same journey in public, one day ahead of you, mistakes included.
